Overview

The Atlas of Human Settlements (AHS) provides a comprehensive and up-to-date view of human settlements around the world, delivering precise information on the evolving footprint and density of human activity through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to satellite imagery.

Release

This limited public release covers the countries of Turkey and Syria for the year 2021, showing the extent of human settlements and population, prior to the earthquake event of February 2023.

Geospatial Data Products

The following geospatial data products are available for each country:

  • Built-up Surface Map: A binary estimate of human presence in each 100 square meter unit area.

  • Built-up Index Map: A scaled estimate of the extent of human presence in each 100 square meter unit area, inferred from buildings. Denoted by a decimal percentage between 0 and 1 indicating how much of the 10meter x 10meter grid cell is covered by buildings.

  • Built-up Settlement Map: A vector representation of the built-up surface, spatially aggregated within a 50m radius.

Quality Statement

These geospatial data are a machine-learning inference-based product that meet stringent model quality tests but have not been physically ground-truthed in the field.
